March 5, 2023 - You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught

What: You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught .... Adult Forum

When: Sunday, March 5th, after worship service

Where: The Park Church - Beecher Hall

The Racial Justice Book Group is pleased to welcome Corning textile artist Julie Thurber to give an Adult Forum presentation after worship on March 5th in Beecher Hall. Julie’s creations are the melding of antique clothing and embroidered verse. She will present to us about her latest exhibition – “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught” - that will open at the Steele Memorial Library on March 6th and be on view through the end of the month. For it she has assembled children’s togs from the mid- 20th century and embroidered them with the lyrics from movie songs or nursery rhymes or songs we all might have learned elementary school music class. Many such songs perpetuate ideas that we now identify as systemically racist. Children are not born racist, they are taught to be racists – whether intentionally or unintentionally – based on their upbringing and family environment. Come meet this local artist and find out about her unique interpretation of the identification and results of culturally acquired racism.
