Daughter of The Park Church Pastors Samuel and Annis Ford Eastman
The Reverends Samuel and Annis Ford Eastman were chosen by Rev. Beecher to be associate pastors in 1894 and thought to be the first ordained clergy couple in America. They lived on the top floor of The Park Church with their three children: Anstice, Max, and Crystal. Max and Crystal were key leaders in movements for women’s suffrage, peace, industrial safety and working conditions. Crystal co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union and is credited with giving one of the 100 most important speeches of the 20th century.
"One hundred years ago, Crystal Eastman (1881-1928) was one of the most conspicuous political women in United States. Yet today she is little known, obscure to public memory despite a political and institutional legacy in many of the social justice movements that defined the twentieth century — labor, feminism, internationalism, free speech, peace.
